History of Block Panchayat
The origin of Haripad Block dates back to 2 October 1957. The N.E.S. (Stage-I) Block was inaugurated at the Camp Office of the Mahasubramanya Swamy Temple in Haripad Town.
The Block Headquarters, located about 2 kilometres west of the Haripad Grama Panchayat Headquarters, near the renowned Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple, was upgraded to a Stage-II Block in 1962. The permanent Block Headquarters is situated on one acre of land, which was generously provided free of cost by Mannarasala Illam and Puthiyil Tharavadu, along with permanent buildings and other necessary facilities.
Covering an area of approximately 90.66 square kilometres, the Haripad Block comprises the Pallippad, Karthikappally, Thrikkunnappuzha, Kumarapuram, Karuvatta, Cheruthana, and Veeyapuram Grama Panchayats.
Agriculture is the major occupation of the people in the Block area. Among these local bodies, Veeyapuram, Cheruthana, Karuvatta, and Pallippad Grama Panchayats depend predominantly on agriculture.
The Grama Panchayat areas of Karthikappally, Kumarapuram, and Thrikkunnappuzha are closely associated with the coir industry, which is one of the distinctive traditional industries of Alappuzha. Thrikkunnappuzha also has a coastal region where fishing is an important occupation.
